Achievements of local sportspeople honoured at Birmingham Sports Awards

Birmingham Sports Awards

Our great country has witnessed some prevailing sporting moments this summer season from the triumphant second place position in both the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, to Andy Murray claiming his second Wimbledon title, but all the individuals who have achieved success this year started somewhere. The annual Birmingham Sports Awards seek to showcase the sportspeople who have excelled in their activity over the past 12 months and acknowledge their strides in their sporting careers.

On Thursday 22 September hundreds of guests were warmly welcomed to the iconic Edgbaston Stadium, with a Champagne reception, for the annual Birmingham Sports Awards. These awards were inaugurated four years ago and since then they have grown and flourished in our expert hands here at Champions (UK) plc.

The sensational night was the perfect opportunity for teams, clubs, managers, professionals and amateurs to swap their sports kit for suits and dresses and enjoy a special night in their honour. Following a three course gourmet meal, former Olympic badminton player Gail Emms MBE and sports broadcaster Gary Newbon took to the stage to host the presentation of the awards.

Each of the 13 categories had three finalists each hoping they would walk away with a coveted award at the end of the night. One of the most prestigious awards of the night, the Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed on former England player and manager Ron Atkinson, for his countless years of contribution to the sporting world and most recently for his talents as a professional football pundit.  (See full list of categories and their winners below).

The glamorous evening not only celebrated those who have achieved great things in the region but it also provided a phenomenal opportunity to contribute significantly to the chosen charity of the evening, Sport Birmingham.
